Yoga Benefits
Standing Poses The standing poses build strength and endurance in the legs and ankles and bring flexibility to the hip joints. This will become a strong support for the spine and prepare the body for more difficult positions. Energetically the body starts to open to a deeper place so the prana, the chi energy, can move through the blocks in the body. We start to feel more grounded with the Earth and feel the connection with the cosmos.
Sitting
The sitting poses are calming. They remove fatigue, refresh the brain and soothe the nerves. They regulate blood pressure and promote a healthy sleep. They also act as important counterposes during the sequences.
Inversions
Inversions revitalize the whole system. They take the weight off the legs, relieving strain. By inverting the inner organs, they activate parts that are sluggish bringing more energy to the area. They improve circulation and tone the glandular system. They help with concentration and change our awareness to see things differently. They can also help aid in sleep. Sirasana in particular activates the pituitary gland. Sarvangasana strengthens the nervous system and the emotions; it activates the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
Balancing Poses
These postures develop lightness, strength and agility. Tremendous control and strength are created and felt in the body as we connect to the the Hara, and feel the balance on the gravitational axis as we play with the gravity. Muscle tone is developed. Coordination and concentration increase.
Backbends
Backbends are rejuvenating. They give energy and courage to the whole system and can help alleviate depression or low energy. They open the chest and make the spine more flexible which can open any blocked energy in the area; and become a better conduit for the Chi energy. The arms and shoulders become strong. The mind and body become alert and more joyful.
Pranayama
Calms and strengthens the mind and body. The lungs, diaphragm and energy body become stronger. We create a field of energy in us and around us. We become part of a continuum of space/time in which we all have our being.
Savasana
A special time to integrate and let go; feel the infusion of energy from your practice move through your body.
Asansas
The Asansas can be practiced in four different modes. This is nice for you to explore for yourself as you create your home practice:
1. Performing each position separately and holding for one minute.
2. Vinyasa: Connecting the poses with the breath by flowing from one to the other.
3. Mala: Connecting the poses through Surya Namaskar (sun salutation).
4. Taking only a few poses and holding them for five minutes each.
